Onion price is still popular topic. One should not be surprised because during last month price of this vegetable increased by almost 100% and now reach 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg.

We already informed about high demand for onion and growing prices. On Tuesday, January 19th the price of domestic onion was even 1.00 PLN (0.25 euro)/kg.

We already informed about rising prices of onion due to its lower supply and increasing demand for this vegetable. On Friday, January 15th prices of domestic onion prices were 0.60 – 0.80 PLN (0.15-0.20 euro)/kg, and locally reached even over 0.90 PLN (0.22 euro)/kg.

In the wholesale market the demand for onion is growing. Onion producers receive more and more requests and offers.

Prices of onion has increased recently. Currently, on the market one can see the increasing demand for this vegetable, so rise in prices is not a surprise.

High demand for onion remains both in mazowieckie and łódzkie provinces and as a result prices are also relatively high.

Even last week one could observe big export of Polish onion to Ukraine what resulted in growing prices of this vegetable.

As we already informed the demand for onion is growing rapidly and Polish onion is in demand also on eastern markets, mainly Ukrainian market.

On the market one can observe lower supply of good quality onion. On Thursday, October 29, the lowest price of onion, size 40 + was 0.50 PLN (0.12 euro)/kg, but the supply was very low.

The demand for onion is quite high both from domestic market and importers from CIS markets. However if the prices of onion increase the demand from Eastern markets can fall.

0.40 PLN (0.095 euro)/kg is the most common price for onions size 40 + and this price is stable for longer time.

The export of onion clearly slowed what influenced the prices. Although in the current season the supply of onion is not very big, its prices decreased to the level when the producers cannot say about production profitability.

Currently, the demand for onion is weak what results in its low prices. The price of onion 50 + packed in bags is from 0.40 PLN (0.095 euro)/kg.

This week the purchase prices of onion much decreased. In łódzkie province the price decreased from 1.80 (0.43 euro) to 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg, in surroundings of Krosno from 1.80 PLN (0.43 euro)/kg to 1.00 - 1.30 PLN (0.24-0.31 euro)/kg.

According to Analytical Centre of Customs Administration in 2008 Poland imported 77.9 thousand tons of onion at value 11.2 million euro.

The purchase prices of peeled onion in processing plants and cold stores slightly decreased this week.

In food-processing plants the purchase prices of peeled onion started decreasing due to lower demand from West-European recipients.

Although estimates for this year’s harvests of onion show that the crops will be lower than last year's even by about 20 % (and lower by 14 % than average of years 2001 - 2005) prices of onion stayed for a long time stable at the low level and recently the prices even a little bit have decreased.

Food processing industry thinks that Polish onion is of poorer quality this year, particularly as regards the size.

We have already informed that the Central Statistical Office (GUS) estimated this year's crop of onion at considerably lower level than last year.

In zachodnio-pomorskie province the purchase prices of peeled onion (packed in 25 kg mesh bags) delivered to the processing plants are at the last week level 0.21 euro/kg.
