Bananas are even cheaper this season in Poland.

On the Polish market it is becoming more and more clear how prices and trade in bananas in general is strongly correlated with the situation in the apple trade. In seasons when apple prices are high, Polish consumers are more likely to reach for bananas, but in years when the supply of domestic apples is high and prices are low, bananas definitely lose out to Polish fruit.

This is what is happening this year. Bananas lose out to domestic competition and Poles reach for bananas only when their prices are really low. This year it can be said that the limit of "profitability" for consumers in retail chains is the price of 0,80 EUR per kilogram, and above this price, according to them, the bananas are too expensive (many stores organise temporary promotions for this product, offering fruit even below 0,80 EUR per kilogram). 

The price pressure on bananas makes the fruit extremely cheap also in small wholesale trade. What is more, recently bananas have become available to importers at a price of several percent less per kilo. At present, bananas of the cheapest brands available on the Polish market are offered by direct importers in small wholesale at a price of only PLN 11 EUR per 18 kg gross carton, i.e. at a price of 0,61 EUR per kg gross. Bananas of more expensive brands cost from 11,60 EUR to 15,60 EUR per 18 kg cardboard box (EUR 0,64 - 0,87 per kg gross). The prices of Chiquita brand bananas in a small wholesale range from 17,50 to 18,60 EUR per 18 kg cardboard (0,97 - 1,03 EUR/kg gross).
