Early potatoes – what next?
As we have already informed, previous week brought a significant drop in prices of early domestic potatoes. It seemed on Friday that prices stopped decreasing, however in Kalisz potatoes were offered from 1.20 PLN/ kg. Generally the prices was at the level of 1.50 – 2.00 PLN/ kg.
What is the reason of lower prices? Is there a huge amount of product on the market or maybe consumers don’t want to buy. No. That situation is caused by problems with distribution. Agents weren’t interested in buying early domestic potatoes. Firstly, there were lots of imported early potatoes and unfortunately the demand was low. Wholesalers are trying to sell them. On the other hand, agents noticed that prices are going to decrease and they stopped purchasing. What is also important retail chains still don’t buy Polish potatoes.
What are the prospects for the future? It can be better that it seems. The situation should improve after the holiday in Poland on 7 June. If the supply of imported potatoes will get lower then Polish ones will have “more space” on the market. What is more, when prices will decrease to the level of 1.00 – 1.10 PLN/ kg then the trade in supermarkets will start.
