Positive environment for European potatoes
2016-02-12 08:00
Current exports of potatoes are within the multi-annual average, but experts expect the volumes exported to increase, mainly towards the East. Export of processed potato-based products to countries outside the EU still show a clear growing trend, thanks to an increasing demand and a favourable €/$ exchange rate.
Due to outside temperatures being higher than normal since harvest, there have been stocking problems (rotting, tubers ageing…) which has reduced availability. Contracts for the next season (2016 harvest) are being discussed. Stable or slightly higher prices have been recorded compared to last year. Trend is still toward an increase in volume of contracts offered, mainly on the industrial market.
