Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (01-07.06.2009)

In the first week of June the weather was the most crucial factor having the impact on prices of fruit and vegetables. Long lasting rainfalls and cold weather adversely affected the growth of many vegetables and strawberries. One could observe decreasing supply of cauliflowers, cucumbers or tomatoes.
The bad weather first of all adversely affected plantations of strawberries. Water on plantations caused that fruits started rotting. However despite the bad weather the prices of strawberries growing under protection was very low - 3 PLN (0.66 euro)/2 kg. Field strawberries were more expensive (4 – 7 PLN (0.88-1.54 euro)/2kg). Only on Friday, June 5 in the afternoon the low supply caused that prices of strawberries slightly increased (3.50 – 5 PLN (0.77-1.10 euro)/2kg for strawberries growing under protection and up to 10 PLN (2.20 euro)/2kg for field strawberries). The purchase prices of strawberries for processing was 1.50 PLN (0.33 euro)/2 kg for strawberries with stalks and 2 PLN (0.44 euro)/2kg for strawberries without stalks. The purchase of industrial strawberries in big plants are starting next week.
The prices of export apples of red varieties 70 + was stable at the level 1.50 – 1.70 PLN (0.33-0.37 euro)/kg. At the end of last week one could observe bigger demand for apples from Russian market.
As regards vegetables the prices of root vegetables and last crop cabbages were stable. The average prices of early: head cabbages, Chinese cabbages and cauliflowers decreased. However one can expect that decline in prices will be stopped due to bad weather. In some areas of Poland prices of cauliflowers and young cabbages started growing already on Thursday.
Last week prices of cucumbers and tomatoes were increasing. The average price of long cucumbers increased by 0.25 PLN (0.06 euro)/kg and price of short cucumbers by 0.75 PLN (0.16 euro)/kg. At the end of the week the average prices of tomatoes packed into 6 kg cartons were higher by: 0.50 PLN (0.11 euro)/kg for tomatoes B about more, 0.25 PLN (0.06 euro)/kg for tomatoes BB and 0.20 PLN (0.04 euro)/kg for tomatoes BBB.
