Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (02-08.02.2009)

2009-02-08 00:00

The beginning of February didn't bring the winter to Poland. At the end of the first week of February the weather is rather like in early spring. Such weather influences the market of domestic vegetables, weakening the impact of the weather factor on the prices of vegetables.

As regards prices of apples the last week didn’t bring any changes. Prices of apples (in zloty) remain at rather stable level: 0.50 – 0.60 PLN (0.11-0.13 euro)/kg for red apples; 0.60 – 0.65 PLN (0.13-0.14 euro)/kg for Idared and 1.00–1.30 PLN (0.22-0.28 euro) for Golden and Mutsu (all prices for apples 7 +; without the packaging). The low prices of apples are influenced by decreasing export to Russia. At the moment there are of lot of Polish apples on the Russian market. Moreover the frost in Russia is stopping the trade.

As regards domestic vegetables, the average prices of brassicas, beets and celeries changed only a little last week. Savoy cabbages were an exception because of their lack on the market. Savoy cabbages from the cold stores are not yet available on the market because the producers are waiting for better prices.

The supply of leeks is less as a result of weakening zloty what influences the import of these vegetables. The similar situation is for carrots. The price of imported carrots clearly increased and their supply is lower. It resulted also in growing prices of domestic carrots, but only these of high quality because only such carrots are in demand.

Although the zloty has been weakening against the euro and the dollar for a long time, last week the prices of imported vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, red sweet pepper and broccoli decreased or remained stable. Only iceberg lettuce was an exception.
Prices of mandarins, oranges and lemons also remained stable.
