Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (04 – 10.01.2010)

Last week the weather was probably one of the most important factors influencing the situation on the wholesale market of fruit and vegetables. Due to frost and snow the trade and transport were difficult. As a result the supply of vegetables was much lower and their prices were growing.

As regards apples their exports to the east slightly increased and as a result the minimum level of prices slightly rose. The most often price of apples of red varieties size 70 + was 0.50 – 0.60 PLN (0.12-0.15 euro)/kg (without packaging). However exporters are waiting for the end of the holiday season in the east, and then the export of Polish apples to the Russian market should grow considerably.

On the market of fresh vegetables one could observe slow increases in prices of almost all domestic vegetables. Price of washed carrot reached 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg. One can expect soon the beginning of import of carrot from the Netherlands.

Prices of Chinese and white cabbages also increased, mainly in the south, where previously they were cheaper than in the center of Poland. In central Poland prices of these cabbages were more stable. Price of white cabbage was from 0.50 to 0.70 PLN (0.12-0.17 euro)/kg, and the price of Chinese cabbage packed into cartons was 1.10 – 1.90 PLN (0.27-0.46 euro)/kg depending on quality and area of Poland. Prices of red cabbage increased in the whole country and reached 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg.

Due to lower supply, leeks are much more expensive than last year and last week their prices were 3 - 5 PLN (0.73-1.22 euro)/kg.

Prices of imported fruit and vegetables did not change with the exception of tomatoes price. Last week their price reached 45 PLN (10.95 euro)/carton 6 kg for Spanish tomatoes size G.
