Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (06-12.04.2009)

Before the Easter the price situation on the market of fresh fruit and vegetables was influenced, similarly as during the previous week, by decreasing supply of domestic last year’s crop vegetables (mainly root vegetables), increasing supply of spring vegetables and coming holidays.
An increase in demand before holidays stopped decline in prices of spring vegetables as well as caused the additional rise in prices of these vegetables, which prices still grow because of decreasing supply. There are more and more spring vegetables on the market and together with growing supply the prices of Polish cucumbers, tomatoes or lettuces are decreasing. However before the Easter holidays the pace of downward trend was slower, prices stabilized or even slightly increased like in the case of short cucumbers.
As regards domestic root vegetables and brassicas one could observe that increase in demand before Easter caused faster rise in their prices. Carrot, parsley, celeriac and beets became more expensive. The prices of Chinese cabbage were also still increasing. At the moment the supply of Chinese cabbage is low and it is more and more difficult to find the cabbage intended for export, of such quality which would guarantee that cabbage withstand the transport. Before the Easter holidays the average prices of white and red cabbages also slightly increased.
The prices of imported cauliflowers, leeks and red onion much decreased. On the contrary prices of broccoli remained at the same level what at the beginning of April or even slightly increased.
The bigger movement on the fruit and vegetables market before Easter had also influenced the prices of citruses. At the beginning of last week prices of oranges or mandarins slightly lowered, but at the end of the week their prices increased again. Last week an average price of bananas also decreased. As regards apples, before holidays one could observe the slight decrease in their supply. Some producers didn’t want to open CA storages. However on the market the supply of apples was enough. Prices of apples remained rather stable. Only the average prices of Idared 70+ and Ligol 75 + slightly increased.
