Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (07.06 – 11.06.2010) - vegetables

The second week of June brought an improvement in the weather. There were more sunny days . It resulted in clear increase in the supply of vegetables, but at the end of the week hot weather adversely affected the crop of young cabbage , cauliflower and broccoli in particular.
At the beginning of the week price of cabbage dropped to 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/pcs. but rose again on Friday to 1.50 PLN (0.37 euro)/pcs. (in the center of the country) – 2.00 PLN (0.49 euro)/pcs. (in the south). Similarly, the price of cauliflowers increased from 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/pcs. (with carton) to 1.70 PLN (0.42 euro)/pcs. (center of Poland) – 2.00 PLN (0.49 euro)/pcs (in the south) at the end of the week. At the same time, because of the heat, the quality of vegetables deteriorated. The price of broccoli was 1.50 – 1.80 PLN (0.37-0.44 euro)/pcs and their quality was also weakened.
Due to very low supply of Chinese cabbage its price remained high. Last week it was 3.00 - 3.20 PLN (0.73-0.78 euro)/kg in the center of Poland and 3.50 - 3.70 PLN (0.86-0.91 euro)/kg in the south. Last week prices of early beet, leeks, celeriac, courgettes and kohlrabi remained stable. The price of French beans decreased to 6.00 – 8.00 PLN (1.47-1.96 euro)/kg.
Prices of greenhouse cucumbers fell again. Low demand and large supply caused that at the end of the week the price of cucumbers (long and short) was 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg and on the local markets prices decreased to 0.50 - 0.80 PLN (0.12-0.20 euro)/kg. Only in the south of Poland (małopolskie province) price of cucumbers was higher – 1.60 PLN (0.39 euro)/kg due to some export to Slovakia.
The past week brought a slight increase in prices of tomatoes. Throughout the period there was no oversupply of tomatoes. Under these conditions the price of tomatoes slightly strengthened. Prices of tomatoes were following: from 20 to 24 PLN (4.90-5.88 euro)/carton 6 kg for size B, 22-25 PLN (5.39-6.13 euro)/carton 6 kg for BB size and from 24 to 26 PLN (5.88-6.37 euro)/carton 6 kg for BBB size. Tomatoes are generally more expensive in the center of the country, cheaper in the south (małopolskie and śląskie provinces)
