Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (11.10 – 15.10.2010) – vegetables

The first half of October passed and sunny weather was favourable for vegetables harvest. However, relatively low temperatures influenced vegetation of many vegetables e.g. cauliflowers and broccoli and in consequence prices of these vegetables. The prices of cauliflowers and broccoli were 1.80-2.00 PLN (0.45-0.51 euro)/pcs and 1.70-2.00 PLN (0.43-0.51 euro)/pcs respectively.
Prices of cabbages, onion and root vegetables remained rather stable.
The price of white cabbage was 0.70-0.80 PLN (0.18-0.20 euro)/kg. Only price of Chinese cabbage decreased locally. Near Kalisz its price fell to 1.00-1.20 PLN (0.25-0.30 euro)/kg but it was mainly due to pressure from retail chains and their promotion policy. In other regions of Poland the price of Chinese cabbage was 1.70 PLN (0.43 euro)/kg.
The price of onion remained at the level 1.00-1.20 PLN (0.25-0.30 euro)/kg. Although the supply of domestic onion is low the demand is not great because onion imported from Holland has similar price and its quality is better.
Price of potatoes also remained stable. In the regions where supply of potatoes is huge their wholesale price was 0.60-0.66 PLN (0.15-0.17 euro)/kg. In other regions (małopolskie province and near Sandomierz) potatoes price reached 1.00 PLN (0.25 euro)/kg.
The domestic demand for tomatoes was still low but prices remained stable at the level 22-24 PLN (5.57-6.07 euro)/6kg for BB size and 20-22 PLN (5.06-5.57 euro)/6 kg for B size tomatoes. It was due to high demand from Russian recipients.
The supply of imported vegetables like aubergines, sweet pepper, courgettes and cucumbers is increasing. There are also available tomatoes imported from Holland and Belgium. Tomatoes from Turkey also appeared on the market.
