Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (12-18.01.2009)

The Orthodox holidays passed and the export of apples to the East speeded up but the price didn’t change. The average price of red apples size 7 + was 0.85 PLN (0.20 euro)/kg with packaging.

The price of Idared the most popular variety for export was the similar. Prices of Golden and Mutsu were traditionally higher – 1.30 PLN (0.31 euro)/kg with cardboard box. Last week the purchase of industrial apples also was bigger but prices remained unchanged. In mazowieckie province the price in purchasing centers was 0.10-0.12 PLN (0.024-0.029 euro)/kg and in processing plants – 0.15 PLN (0.036 euro)/kg. In the south of Poland where apples are delivered from the centre of Poland, prices were traditionally a little bit higher – 0.18-0.19 PLN (0.043-0.046 euro)/kg.

At the moment frost isn't already so strong like in the first decade of January what resulted in little decrease of the average prices (below 10 %) of the majority of domestic vegetables e.g. root celeries, carrots and Chinese cabbages. Prices of some vegetables e.g. beets and onions remained stable. The average price of leeks packed in cardboard boxes increased a little bit from 2.35 PLN (0.57 euro)/kg to 2.75 (0.66 euro)/kg. Savoy cabbage also became more expensive as a result of significant decrease in the supply of this vegetable.

The average prices of some imported vegetables also a little bit dropped: iceberg lettuces and tomatoes. The drop in average prices was a result of change of the maximum prices of these vegetables. Broccoli, cauliflowers and cucumbers became more expensive and their average prices at the end of the week were appropriately 4.20 PLN (1,00 euro)/piece, 7.50 PLN (1.81 euro)/piece and 8.55 PLN (2.06 euro)/kg.

Last week the prices of citruses remained high. The demand for citruses is big and the supply is insufficient. Mandarins are the best example of such situation. Their prices were from 3,8 to 5,0 PLN (0.91-1.20)/kg depending on size. Importers of citruses don't have a problem with finding recipients, whose buy even mandarins of poorer quality.
