Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (13-19.07.2009)
The purchase of strawberries for processing already finished and now the processing plants are buying raspberries, currants. They also started purchasing of sour cherries and of course fruit growers are strongly upset about their prices.
This year the prices of sour cherries are again very low. Last week the purchase price of sour cherries for freezing decreased from 1 PLN (0.23 euro)/kg to 0.60 – 0.80 PLN (0.14-0.18 euro)/kg. Price of dessert sour cherries intended for export was about 2.00 PLN (0.46 euro)/kg.
The situation with blackcurrants is a little bit better because their prices are stable at the level 2 – 2.20 PLN (0.46-0.51 euro)/kg. The purchase prices of raspberries were also stable - 3.80 PLN (0.88 euro)/kg.
Last week prices of cherries were low due to high supply of these fruits. The price of cherries of dark varieties intended for export was only 2.50 - 5.00 PLN (0.58-1.16 euro)/kg depending on the area of Poland.
The early apples appeared on the wholesale markets. Last week the average price of apples of variety Early Geneva decreased from 2.20 PLN (0.51 euro)/kg to 1.55 PLN (0.36 euro)/kg. These prices are only for apples of good quality, because only such apples are in demand. Due to adverse weather condition this year the quality of Early Geneva isn’t very good.
On the market of fresh vegetables one could observe the fluctuation in prices of cauliflowers and broccoli. As we wrote last week the heavy crop of these vegetables ended what resulted in their prices increase – to the average price 2.20 PLN (0.51 euro)/pcs for cauliflowers and 1.70 PLN (0.39 euro)/pcs for broccoli. However at the end of last week the supply a little bit grew and the average price of cauliflowers dropped to 1.90 PLN (0.44 euro)/pcs and price of broccoli to 1.60 PLN (0.37 euro)/pcs.
This year the supply of cucumbers is low for a few weeks. It mainly concerns the short greenhouse cucumbers. Last week their average price even reached 3.00 PLN (0.69 euro)/kg but at the end of the week the price decreased to 2.60 PLN (0.60 euro)/kg. However one cannot expect quickly the further decrease.
The downward trend in prices of tomatoes was stopped. Last week the supply of tomatoes went down and in result their prices increased by over 10 %. The average price of tomatoes of B size rose from 1.83 PLN (0.42 euro)/kg to 2.08 PLN (0.48 euro)/kg and the price of BB tomatoes rose from 2.00 PLN (0.46 euro)/kg to 2.25 PLN (0.52 euro)/kg.
