Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (14.06 – 18.06.2010) – vegetables

During the third week of June the supply of many vegetables was decreasing. It concerned mainly early cabbage, cauliflowers, broccoli and cucumbers and courgettes. One of the reasons of lower supply was cold nights, which affected the growth of vegetables. Additionally decreasing prices of cucumbers, cauliflower s or cabbage caused bigger demand. As regards cauliflowers and broccoli, the main spring crop finished last week.
In the case of greenhouse cucumbers, the increase in prices was different depending on the region of the country. In mazowieckie province prices of cucumbers grew from 0.80 – 1.00 PLN (0.20-0.24 €)/kg to 1.30 – 1.50 PLN (0.32-0.37 €)/kg, and even to 1.60 PLN (0.39 €)/kg. In the west of Poland prices increased to 1.50 - 1.80 PLN (0.37-0.44 €)/kg.
Similarly, in the south of Poland, however there the prices were higher earlier.
Prices of field cucumbers also increased. At the end of last week their price was 1.80 – 2.50 PLN (0.44-0.61 €)/kg depending on the size and the region of the country.
In the case of early cabbage, cauliflowers and broccoli the earliest increase in their prices was noted in the south of Poland. While in central Poland the price of broccoli was 1.30 – 1.50 PLN (0.32-0.37 €)/pcs., in the south their price rose to 1.80 – 2.20 PLN (0.44-0.54 €)/pcs. Prices of cauliflowers were as follows: 1.70 - 1.80 PLN (0.42-0.44 €)/pcs. in the centre and 2.00 PLN (0.49 €)/pcs. in the south. However, on Friday one could observe the decline in the supply of cauliflowers what probably will result in price increase.
Due to bigger demand for courgettes mainly from retail chains, their supply decreased and prices rose from 2.00 – 2.50 PLN (0.49-0.61 €)/kg to 2.50 – 3.00 PLN (0.61-0.74 €)/kg. One can expect further increase in courgettes prices.
The supply of Chinese cabbage is still low, however in łódzkie province situation can improve. Generally, the lowest supply is in the south of Poland and there prices remained at the level of 3.00 – 3.50 PLN (0.74-0.86 €)/kg. In the center prices are lower - from 2.40 to 2.90 PLN (0.59-0.71 €)/kg.
Last week prices of tomatoes remained stable. At the end of the week the price of B size tomatoes was 24 - 26 PLN (5.90-6.39 €)/6 kg, and the price of BB size tomatoes was 26 - 28 PLN (6.39-6.88 €)/6 kg.
Prices of early potatoes decreased even to 1.00 – 1.20 PLN/kg, but it was price of small, poor quality potatoes. The price of good quality potatoes was about 2.00 PLN/kg.
Short-term fluctuations in supply of vegetables did not affect the general tendency on vegetables market - the offer of domestic vegetables is still growing and the supply of imported vegetables is lower every week. Only the supply of imported sweet peppers is still high. Last week prices of peppers from the Netherlands increased from 40 to 42 PLN/5 kg.
