Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (15-21.06.2009)
In the third week of June prices of fresh fruit and vegetables didn't change much. Only prices of tomatoes decreased considerably and on the contrary prices of apples increased much.
The stocks of apples are low at the moment what together with still big demand for Polish apples results in growing prices. Last week the price of Idared 70 +, packed in cartons was even 2.30 PLN (0.50 euro)/kg i.e. by about 0.50 PLN (0.11 euro)/kg more than week earlier.
The prices of cherries were going down. The quality of cherries isn't good this year because of unfavourable weather. A lot of fruits are cracked, they are easily rotting and they don’t withstand the long transport. So it is difficult to find the cherries for export. Last week the average price of cherries decreased from 4.50 PLN (1.00 euro)/kg to 3.50 PLN (0.77 euro)/kg.
The prices of strawberries are still very low and producers can’t expect the increase. Prices of dessert strawberries were from 1.50 PLN (0.33 euro)/kg (Honeoye) up to 3.75 PLN (0.82 euro)/kg (variety Marmolada intended for export). The supply of industrial strawberries is lower due to their very low prices. The price of strawberries with stalks is 0.60 - 0.80 PLN (0.13-0.17 euro)/kg and the price of strawberries without stalks is 1.10 – 1.25 PLN (0.24 -0.27 euro)/kg. Many fruit growers stopped picking the strawberries for processing.
The purchase prices of gooseberries are stable at the level 1.6 – 2.50 PLN (0.35-0.55 euro)/kg depending on the area of Poland.
On the market of fresh vegetables the prices of most vegetables were decreasing however the declines weren't too big. The average prices of the following vegetables decreased to: Chinese cabbage to 1.28 PLN (0.28 euro)/kg, early carrot to 2.30 PLN (0.50 euro)/kg), greenhouse long and short cucumbers below 2 PLN/kg, broccoli and cauliflowers to 1.90 PLN (0.42 euro)/pcs. However at the end of the week prices of cauliflowers in małopolskie province increased to 2.00 – 2.50 PLN (0.44-0.55)/pcs due to lower supply of these vegetables. The biggest decline in prices was noted for early cabbage - from 0.50 PLN (0.11 euro)/kg to 0.25 PLN (0.05 euro)/kg.
After two weeks of growth the prices of tomatoes started decreasing. The average price of B tomatoes decreased from 3.42 PLN (0.75 euro)/kg to 2.92 PLN (0.64 euro)/kg, and the price of tomatoes BB - from 3.58 PLN (0.78 euro)/kg to 3.08 PLN (0.68 euro)/kg.
Last week the average price of last year’s crop onion increased to 0.95 PLN (0.21 euro)/kg. After considerable decrease at the end of the second week of June (to 4 PLN (0.88 euro)/kg), the price of French increased to 5 – 6 PLN (1.10-1.32 euro)/kg.
