Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (16-22.03.2009)

The most essential information from fresh fruit and vegetables market is a rise in prices of apples intended for export as well as growing prices of some domestic vegetables caused by their smaller supply. Growing prices of apples result mainly from the cost of fruit storage.

The demand for Polish apples remains stable and it is fortunately high. At the end of last week prices of red varieties reached the level 0.90 – 1.00 PLN (0.19-0.21 euro)/kg for apples, 70 +, packed into carton. Golden Delicious was traditionally more expensive and its price was 1.80 – 1.90 PLN (0.39-0.41 euro)/kg.

On the market of fresh vegetables one could observe lower supply of domestic vegetables of high quality. As a result good quality vegetables e.g celeriac, onion, beets, parsley had high prices. It was the most clearly visible in the case of carrot which price reached 1.70 PLN (0.37 euro)/kg and it can still grow. On the contrary the demand for white and red cabbages and their prices were still at the low level.

In the discussed period one could observe slightly decreasing demand for Chinese cabbage because of export lower than in the second week of March. At the end of last week prices of Chinese cabbage were 1.40-1.50 PLN (0.30-0.32 euro)/kg for cabbage packed into cartons.
The prices of imported fruit and vegetables were more stable than the week earlier. First of all one could notice that the price of bananas finally stabilized. As we wrote a rise in prices of bananas was caused mainly by weakening the Polish currency, but also as a result of rise in exporters prices. Last week prices of bananas stopped, however their current level is very high. On the local wholesale markets their price is about 7 PLN (1.51 euro)/kg, while at the same time last year the price was below 5 PLN (1.08 euro)/kg.
