Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (25-31.05.2009)

The prices of the majority of fruit and vegetables were decreasing last week. However the cold weather and rainfalls in the end of the week stopped the decrease in prices of some products e.g. strawberries.
Prices of apples intended for export went down again last week. The average price of apples of red varieties was 1.50 – 1.70 PLN (0.34-0.38 euro)/kg (size 70 +, in cartons). It is a result of smaller demand on the Russian market and the fact that since 1 June Russia is enforcing additional safety certificates for apples imported from Poland.
Prices of strawberries were decreasing till last Thursday and their prices were even 3-6 PLN (0.67-1.34 euro)/2kg. But at the end of the week bad weather stopped the harvest of strawberries and their prices increased above 6 PLN (1.34 euro)/2kg reaching even 10 PLN (2.24 euro)/2kg. Last week the purchase of strawberries for processing started in the smaller plants. Large companies will start the purchase in the second week of June. The first purchase prices of strawberries for freezing were at the level 1.50 – 2.00 PLN (0.34-0.45 euro)/kg.
On the market of fresh vegetables there were the next declines in prices of tomatoes, cucumbers, early cabbage and early Chinese cabbage. The average price of tomatoes B size decreased from 3.17 PLN (0.71 euro)/kg to 2.70 PLN (0.60 euro)/kg, the price of tomatoes BB from 3.58 PLN (0.80 euro)/kg to 3.17 PLN (0.71 euro)/kg. The price of long cucumbers decreased from 2.70 PLN (0.60 euro)/kg to 2 PLN (0.45 euro)/kg and the price of short cucumbers from 2.85 PLN (0.64 euro)/kg to 2.25 PLN (0.50 euro)/kg. The average price of early cabbage decreased from 2 PLN (0.45 euro)/pcs to 1.45 PLN (0.32 euro)/pcs and the price of early Chinese cabbage from 1.70 PLN (0.38 euro)/kg to 1.45 PLN (0.32 euro)/kg. It is of course the result of growing supply of these vegetables. One could also notice the decline in prices of beets of last year’s crop (to the average level 0.50 PLN (0.11 euro)/kg) as a result of small demand for these vegetables.
The price of cauliflowers remained stable – 3.50 PLN (0.78 euro)/pcs. The price of onion increased to the level 0.80 PLN (0.18 euro)/kg. Last week the bunched early carrot appeared in the purchasing centers and the price was 1.40 – 2.30 PLN (0.31-0.51 euro)/bunch. Last week the purchase of French beans also started and their wholesale price was about
12 PLN (2.69 euro)/kg.
