Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (27.04-03.05.2009)

During the last days of April on fruit and vegetable markets one could observe recent trends The important factor influences prices is the weather. Warm and sunny days have returned recently and such weather supports vegetation of early vegetables. However the lack of rain can adversely affects the growth of many vegetables.
Last week, shorter because of May holidays, the prices of apples increased again. The demand from eastern recipients is still very high but on the market one can observe decreasing supply of apples, especially apples of good quality. Additionally some producers delay opening the cold stores. As a result, last week, prices of red varieties (70 +, CA) reached 1.80 PLN (0.41 euro)/kg. The price of very popular variety Ligol (75 +, CA) increased to 1.90 PLN (0.43 euro)/kg and the prices of Golden Delicious and Mutsu (70 +, CA) were 2.30 PLN (0.52 euro)/kg and 2.50 PLN (0.57 euro)/kg appropriately. The season for apples is slowly ending and soon apples will replaces by strawberries.
On the market of fresh vegetables it was the consecutive week of growing supply of early vegetables. The weather was more favorable, without night frost. As a result one could observe further decrease in prices of early vegetables. The prices of early vegetables decreased week-on-week as follows: early cabbage by about 1 PLN/pcs to average price 3 PLN (0.68 euro)/pcs, lettuces to 10 – 18 PLN (2.28–4.11 euro)/16pcs, greenhouse long cucumbers to 2.75 – 3.00 PLN (0.63-0.68 euro)/kg; short cucumbers to 3.20 – 3.60 PLN (0.73-0.82 euro)/kg. The price of tomatoes also slightly decreased to 45 – 54 PLN (10.27-12.33 euro)/6 kg depending on size.
Last week the price of white asparagus was from 3.50 to 4.00 PLN (0.80-0.91 euro)/kg and the price of green ones was from 4.50 to 5.00 PLN (1.03-1.14 euro)/kg.
As regards last year’s crop vegetables, their prices remained rather stable. However after the period of growing prices caused by decreasing supply, one could observe slight decrease in average price of carrot and significant decrease in purchase prices of celeriac in these regions of Poland where the prices were the highest.
Prices of the majority of imported vegetables and fruit also remained stable. The broccoli was an exception as their prices decreased by over 20 % week-on-week. As regards fruit one could observe stronger decrease in prices of bananas to 74 – 80 PLN (16.90-18.26 euro)/kg.
