Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (31.08-06.09.2009)

At the beginning of September downward trend in prices of apples which one could already observe at the end of August, was even stronger.

Prices of eating apples are dropping due to lower export to Russia caused by high customs duty and higher supply on the domestic market. The price of apples of early varieties, size 70 + (without packages) was 0.60 – 0.70 PLN(0.14-0.17 euro)/kg. The price of industrial apples remained stable at the low level: 0.13 – 0.15 PLN(0.03-0.036 euro)/kg in purchasing centers and to 0.25 PLN (0.06 euro)/kg for apples delivered to the plants.

Last week prices of raspberries for processing were above 4.00 PLN (0.97 euro)/kg for fruits of the superior quality, about 3.30 PLN(0.80 euro)/kg for fruits of good quality and about 2.80 PLN(0.68 euro)/kg for raspberries of poorer quality.

The purchase of chokeberries is slowly ending. Prices were very low for the entire period of the purchase: 0.40 PLN (0.10 euro)/kg.

In south-east Poland (podkarpackie province) there is still big oversupply of peaches. Their prices in this area are lower (about 0.80 PLN (0.19 euro)/kg) than in other areas of the country.

The supply of cauliflowers and broccoli increased in some areas. At the moment cauliflowers and broccoli are cheaper in lubelskie and podkarpackie provinces where prices dropped to 1.40 – 1.60 PLN (0.34-0.39 euro)/pcs (cauliflowers) and 1.50 – 1.70 PLN (0.36-0.41 euro)/pcs (broccoli). In other areas of Poland prices remained higher by about 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/pcs.

Last week one could see the high supply of Chinese cabbage on the market and its price was 1.00 – 1.20 PLN (0.24-0.29 euro)/kg.

This season the situation on white cabbage market will be probably different than last year, when there was oversupply of this vegetable. At the moment prices of white cabbage are 0.30 – 0.45 PLN (0.07-0.11 euro)/kg and demand is quite big.

Last week prices of root vegetables were decreasing what is normal in the period when their supply grows. Prices of parsley dropped even to 2.00 PLN (0.48 euro)/kg, the price of beets was from 0.30 PLN (0.07 euro)/kg, the price of celeriac was 1.00 – 1.30 PLN (0.24-0.31 euro)/kg and prices of carrot fluctuated from 0.50 PLN (0.12 euro)/kg to 0.90 PLN (0.22 euro)/kg.

Last week prices of tomatoes considerably fluctuated. As a result of the great competition from field-grown tomatoes and greenhouse tomatoes imported from the Netherlands, prices of domestic greenhouse tomatoes dropped to 7.50 PLN (21.82 euro)/carton of 6 kg (B size) and 8.00 PLN (1.94 euro)/carton (BB). However at the end of the week the price of B tomatoes (10.00 – 11.00 PLN (2.43-2.67 euro)/carton) exceeded prices of BB tomatoes (9.00 – 10.00 PLN (2.18-2.43 euro)/carton), because in this season the demand for smaller tomatoes is generally bigger.
The end of the last week also brought the decrease in prices of greenhouse cucumbers. In the current season one can observe big fluctuation in prices of these vegetables what is a result of difficulties in their vegetation. At the end of the week prices of long cucumbers were 1.50 – 2.00 PLN (0.36-0.48 euro)/kg and the price of short cucumbers - 2.00 – 2.50 PLN (0.48-0.61 euro)/kg.
