Crops of vegetables in 2008

The Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) published on its website "Preliminary results of assessing of main crops in 2008". This document contains data among others about potatoes, field vegetables, fruit from fruit-bearing trees and fruit from plantation.

As regards potatoes the GUS assessed the area of production at much over 0.5 million ha but it is by 3.6% less than last year. The average potatoes yield per hectare is assessed at 18.9 t/ha and it will be lower than last year by 8.7%. Crops are assessed at 10.4 million ton i.e. by 12% less than last year. Because of adverse weather conditions the quality of tubers won't be too good.
As regards field vegetables the total production is assessed at 4.4 million ton (by 12.2% less than last year).

GUS predict that crops of all basic vegetables will be lower as a result of reducing the area of cultivations and poorer yield. Crops of cabbages will be at the level of 90.5% of the last year crops, cauliflowers at the level of 94.4%, onion at the level of 79.7%, carrots at the level of 85.3%, beetroots at the level of 85.4%, cucumbers at the level of 92.1%, and tomatoes at the level of 90.1% of the last year crops.
