Medfel: The Mediterranean Business platform
The discussions and debates taking place from 13 to 15 May in Perpignan make MedFEL a unique
link, forging closer connections between the two sides of the Mediterranean. The fair fully meets the
needs of producers and traders on both the north and south shores of the Mediterranean as a
platform to dialogue, do business, optimise transport and logistics operations and develop business
partnerships.
The press takes advantage of this flagship event for the Mediterranean fruit and vegetable sector to
keep abreast of innovations, consumption trends and crop forecasts. With invitations to visit pilot
farming projects, media representatives at MedFEL can stay on the ball with the F&V markets of
tomorrow.
Every year MedFEL showcases a particular product. This year, melons and water melons are in the
spotlight and for the first time in its history, MedFEL is hosting the Euro
‐Mediterranean MelonCongress, scheduled for 15 May. This international gathering will be preceded, on 14 May, by a
melon
‐themed press conference, debates on organic melons and the traditional melon plantingforecasts for Morocco, Spain and France in collaboration with APREL (French Association for
Vegetable Research & Experimentation in Provence) and AIM (Melon Joint Trade Association).
This year's MedFEL debates examine the 5+5 Dialogue launched in November 2013 in Algiers,
focusing on agricultural issues and food security between countries on both the northern (Spain,
France, Malta, Portugal and Italy) and southern shores (Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania and
Morocco) of the Mediterranean. The aim is to create a political discussion forum that will move
forward sector
‐based cooperation in the region.Working on concrete initiatives to encourage closer agricultural cooperation within the
Mediterranean is one of MedFEL's main objectives. In 2013, at its fifth edition, MedFEL hosted 4,894
visitors, 231 exhibitors from the Mediterranean basin and 3,840 BtoB meetings which were
converted into tangible orders for the exhibitors and international buyers in attendance.
MedFEL's debates in Perpignan provide an opportunity to reflect on the Mediterranean's dynamic
and logistical challenges, along with water and food security in the region. The debates provide a
fresh take on collective brands in the fruit and vegetable sector and seek to encourage European
involvement in the EGEA (European Great Excellent Achievement) programmes to persuade people
to eat fruit and vegetables. Attendance at MedFEL is of course a must for anyone wishing to stay up
to date with consumption trends, courtesy of the peaches/nectarines, apricot and melon crop
forecasts.
