Polish onion in Ukrainian supermarkets

Furthermore, a week before supermarkets preferred relatively inexpensive onions of Turkish origin, while now they are more interested in purchasing Polish produce.

Retail chains connect those developments with extremely low quality and limited shelf life of Turkish onions. As a result, they switched over to buying more expensive Polish produce of higher quality.

For the present, supermarkets are ready to purchase onions from Poland at UAH 7/kg (EUR 0.44/kg), while average prices of Turkish onions vary between UAH 5.60-5.80/kg (EUR 0.35-0.36/kg).

The market participants also believe that the supply of imported onions could be even higher in Ukraine; however, the majority of importers do not risk to raise purchase volumes in view of instable currency market.
