Weekly summary - fresh-market.pl price analyse (18-24.08.2008)

In the third week of August, purchase prices of apples for processing were still the most important. Fruit growers didn't come to agreement with processing plants and price of apples purchase stayed at the average level of 0.04 EUR/kg.

Fruit growers started protesting in front of processing plants. According to the unanimous opinion of fruit growers low prices of apples for processing will result in low prices of dessert apples at the peak of the season. Now purchase prices of early dessert apples are already at quite low level of 0.21 - 0.24 EUR/kg.

Plums are equally cheap. Last week purchase prices of plums for processing fluctuated from 0.08 to 0.90 EUR/kg. Price of plums of 1st class, size 4+, intended for the export was 0.21 - 0.24 EUR/kg. However it was still possible to obtain price above 0.30 EUR/kg for plums of very good quality.

Purchase prices of chokeberries won’t probably increase. In the third week of August this price stayed at the average level of 0.21 EUR/kg. Last year, in the end of August purchase price of chokeberries achieved the level of 1.06 EUR/kg.

Situation on vegetables market is much more calmly. Prices are rather stable. Prices of red sweet peppers, after the drop in the second week of August, last week didn't have significant changes. In the end of last week average price of red sweet peppers was 0.68 EUR/kg. Prices of green sweet peppers were decreasing the most, especially in the south of Poland, where on Friday price was 0.11EUR/kg.

Prices of Chinese cabbages stabilized at the average level of 0.33 EUR/kg. Cauliflowers, of which the price rose in the last period, last week again got cheaper. More cauliflowers appeared on the market and in the end of last week prices reached the average level of 0.39 EUR/piece. Price of big cauliflowers of good quality, packed in cardboard boxes was about 0.48 EUR/piece.
After the increase of prices of tomatoes at the beginning of last week (last Monday and Tuesday price of tomatoes of BB size was 3.33 EUR/box of 6 kg), their price came back to the level of 2.72 EUR/box of 6 kg.

On the market there is little of field cucumbers. Storms which passed above Poland (especially in the centre and Silesia region) last weekend damaged a lot of plantations of cucumbers. Last week price of cucumbers size 6 - 9 increased to 0.73 – 0.76 EUR/kg.
