Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analyse (22.12.2008 – 04.01.2009)

During the last decade of December, pre-Christmas period was of course the most important for trade. In 2008, differently than usually, before Christmas there was not a big increase of sales of fruit and vegetables which would influence a rise in prices.

At the end of 2008 prices of some fresh fruit and vegetables were increasing slightly and prices of some vegetables were stable. The beginning of 2009 didn't also bring important price movements. The reason is obvious - holiday season. The trade will start actually on Monday, 5th January.

Before Christmas the average price of apples intended for export slightly increased. The highest price of Golden Delicious also increased (to 1.50 PLN (0.36 euro)/kg with packaging). The purchase price of industrial apples decreased and in the central part of Poland it was 0.12 PLN (0.029 euro)/kg. Additionally at the end of the year the purchase of industrial apples was stopped.

As regards vegetables the prices of the majority of domestic vegetables slightly increased. Only in case of carrot the price increase was bigger and its price in the central part of Poland increased even to 1.20 PLN (0.29 euro)/kg. Chinese cabbages also became more expensive, but only sorted ones (800 – 1200 g) of good quality, intended for export (to 1.20 PLN (0.29 euro)/kg with packaging). Prices of other cabbages, beets, potatoes and leeks remained stable. As a result of lower than expected increase in demand for imported fruits and vegetables the upward trend in their prices was also weaker than expected.
