Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analyse (29.09-05.10.2008)
The prices of industrial apples decreased on the turn of Sep/Oct. In the purchasing centres their price was 0.04 – 0.05 EUR/kg at the end of the week.
This due to the fact that there is a crop of dessert apples and there is quite great fall of apples and the supply of apples for industry grew firmly.
Prices of dessert apples remain low and stable at the moment. The price of cheapest varieties - Lobo and Cortland of 7+ size was about 0.20 – 0.22 EUR/kg. Prices of more late varieties were about 0.30 EUR/kg. It is worthwhile to remind that according to experts one can expect the increase of the prices at the beginning of new year but only fruit growers who will be able to offer a few hundred ton of apples will get better price.
Less and less fresh plums come the market. Last week price of plums of 4+ size, for the export was 0.50 EUR/kg (with the packaging). The price of cold stored plums was 0.61 – 0.64 EUR/kg.
The late September trends of vegetable market are still valid. In principle prices of root vegetables are stable. One can observe clearly smaller supply of cauliflowers and broccoli. The average price of cauliflowers was 0.58 – 0.64 EUR/piece, broccoli finished the week with the average price 0.60 EUR/piece.
The price of Polish red pepper remains stable although supply is decreasing. At the end of last week the price of red pepper of 1st class in cardboard boxes remained at the level of 1 – 1.02 EUR/kg. The more expensive pepper wouldn't find buyers.
As we informed last week, the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) announced estimates of crops of vegetables. Onion scores the worst - about 20% less than in 2007. There is much less onion of worse quality in some regions of the country but the average price remains stable at the level of 0.15 0.17 EUR/kg at the moment.
After the stable end of September tomatoes became more expensive. At the end of last week the price of tomatoes (including the cardboard packaging) reached the following averages: B size 0.93 EUR/kg; BB size 0.98 EUR/kg. Such prices are already a barrier for the effective demand and as the consequence the amount of tomatoes sold in big wholesale trade started decreasing at the end of last week.
Small amount of greenhouse cucumbers on the market, especially in the centre of Poland, resulted in the increase of their prices to the average level of 1.4 EUR/kg for long cucumbers and 1.5 EUR/kg for short ones.
