Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (03-09.08.2009)
The beginning of August didn't bring great changes in the price situation on the fruit market. The sour cherries season for fruit farmers is lost; the purchase prices of sour cherries are stable at the level 0.50 – 0.70 PLN (0.12-0.17 euro)/kg.
However fruit farmers didn’t stop the protest against such situation because they are just before the harvest of the most important fruits – apples. Polish Association of Juices Producers has already announced that the purchase price of industrial apples would not exceed 0.20 PLN (0.048 euro)/kg. At the moment the harvest of Early Geneva variety is ending. Last week the price of these apples intended for export was about 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg.
Prices of plums also didn't change. In the areas where there is high supply of plums (south and south-east of Poland), prices are from 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg. In podlaskie and mazowieckie provinces supply of plums is low what results in higher prices – about 4.00 PLN (0.96 euro)/kg.
At the end of last week the purchase prices of raspberries decreased to 2.40 – 3.20 PLN (0.57-0.77 euro)/kg (depending on the quality).
Prices of the majority of fresh vegetables was rather stable. One could see slight downward trend in prices of sweet pepper. At the end of the week the average price of red and yellow peppers was 3.30 PLN (0.79 euro)/kg, white pepper - 2.20 PLN (0.53 euro)/kg, and green pepper - 1.75 (0.42 euro)/kg.
Prices of cauliflowers and broccoli were still slightly increasing. Although on the market there is still low supply of cauliflowers and broccoli, their prices are enough high and probably won’t further increase. Last week the average price of cauliflowers was 2.80 PLN (0.67 euro)/pcs and the average price of broccoli was 2.30 PLN (0.55 euro)/pcs.
The price of Chinese cabbage was stable at the level 1.00 – 1.20 PLN (0.24-0.29 euro)/kg. The quality of Chinese cabbages is poor, they are rotting. It resulted in much lower export of this vegetables. On the market one can observe very low supply of good quality Chinese cabbage what probably result in prices increase in the near future.
At the end of first week of August the prices of tomatoes were still low. The average price of B tomatoes was 1.58 PLN (0.38 euro)/kg and price of BB tomatoes 1.83 PLN (0.44 euro)/kg . However one can observe falling supply of tomatoes what can result in prices increase.
Prices of greenhouse cucumbers also remained low. Their supply is rather high. The average price of long cucumbers was 1.25 PLN (0.30 euro)/kg and the price of short ones was 1.45 PLN (0.35 euro)/kg. However for short cucumbers one can observe big fluctuation in prices depending on the area of Poland - from 1.10 PLN (0.26 euro)/kg to 1.70 PLN (0.41 euro)/kg. The worse situation is for field grown cucumbers due to adverse weather (too much rain). The price of cucumbers for pickles was 1.80 – 2.70 PLN (0.43-65 euro)/kg, and the price of cucumbers for Polish style pickles (in brine) was 1.35 – 2.00 (0.32 -0.48 euro)/kg.
