Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (07-13.09.2009)
The pace of apples harvest is slowly becoming faster but it is still far away to its peak. However the apples prices are already the hot topic.
Prices of apples for processing are stable at a low level of 0.13 - 0.16 PLN (0.03-0.04 euro)/kg and such prices are much insufficient for producers to cover their costs. The Association of Polish Fruit Growers announced that if prices do not rise, they will start protests, as it was last year. On the other hand the representatives of processing plants still claim that due to the world economic recession, the of prices of concentrate are low and additionally it is a big competition from Chinese concentrate.
Last week didn’t brought changes in the prices of dessert apples. On the market there is a lot of apples but demand is low as well as the export to Russia. The price of apples is about 0.60 PLN (0.14 euro)/kg for apples 70 +. One can expect the bigger movement when such varieties like Gala or Szampion will appear on the market. These varieties are more popular on eastern markets. In the south of Poland the first lots of Gala are expected in one week.
On the market there are also a lot of plums. The price of plums of the best quality intended for export is 1.10 - 1.30 PLN (0.26-0.31 euro)/kg (40 +, with packages). The price of industrial plums is 0.30 - 0.40 PLN (0.07-0.09 euro)/kg.
Last week the supply of cauliflowers and broccoli in all major production areas was higher finally. However the lowest prices about 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/pcs. are still in lubelskie and podkarpackie provinces. In central part of Poland and in małopolskie province prices of cauliflowers fell during the week from more than 2.00 PLN (0.48 euro)/pcs. to 1.50 - 1.80 PLN (0.36-0.43 euro)/pcs. and broccoli prices fell to 1.20 – 1.50 PLN (0.29-0.36 euro)/ pcs.
Prices of root vegetables remained stable, with the exception of parsley. Its price increased slightly (buy about 0.10 PLN (0.02 euro)/kg) in some areas of the country. The prices of greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes still remain unstable. The average price of short cucumbers increased again - from 2.00 PLN (0.48 euro)/kg to 2.45 PLN (0.58 euro)/kg at the end of the week. The price of tomatoes were increasing at the beginning of last week but at the end of the week slightly decreased. The average price of B tomatoes was 1.75 PLN (0.42 euro)/kg and BB tomatoes 1.83 PLN (0.44 euro)/kg.
The price of white cabbage is slowly rising. In the second week of September it was 0.40 - 0.45 PLN (0.09-0.10euro)/kg. This year there won’t be probably the oversupply of cabbage as it was last year. Last week the price of Chinese cabbage was decreasing and at the end of the week its price was from 0.70 PLN (0.17 euro)/kg (without the packages).
