Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (09-15.03.2009)
In the second week of March, on the market of fresh fruit and vegetables, one could observe similar trends as at the beginning of the month. As regards the export of apples it was stable prices at low level but the large volume.
Prices of red varieties of apples 70 + in cardboard boxes stayed at the level 0.85 – 0.90 PLN (0.19-0.20 euro)/kg. Prices of Golden Delicious and Mutsu were still much higher. The price of Golden was 1.70 – 1.85 PLN (0.38-0.41 euro)/kg and Mutsu 1.90 PLN (0.42 euro)/kg. The purchase prices of industrial apples also remained stable – from 0.15 to 0.18 PLN (0.03-0.04 euro)/kg.
On the market of domestic vegetables one could observe mainly increases in prices of most of vegetables e.g. washed carrot, onion, red onion, leeks and Chinese cabbage. On Friday the price of Chinese cabbage in cardboard boxes was 1.65 PLN (0.37 euro)/kg and on Saturday its price increased even to 1.80 PLN (0.40 euro)/kg. The supply of Chinese cabbage is decreasing and together with rising demand it causes rise in prices. The price of parsley also went up. The price of washed parsley was 2.20 PLN (0.49 euro)/kg. However the price of this vegetable is still lower than last year, when the price was about 3 PLN (0.67 euro)/kg for unwashed parsley. On the contrary the price of washed celeriac and beets stabilized after increase at the beginning of the month. Downward trend in price of red cabbage was continued. Its average price was 0.38 PLN (0.08 euro)/kg. The price of white cabbage remained stable at low level – 0.20 PLN (0.04 euro)/kg.
As regards imported vegetables, last week the prices of tomatoes and sweet pepper from Spain were increasing. However week on week increase in price of tomatoes wasn’t big but one can see lasting upward trend. One should also remember that the increase in prices of Spanish tomatoes is influenced by the import of cheaper tomatoes from Morocco or Turkey. On the contrary the growth in prices of red pepper was much bigger. At the end of last week the average price of pepper was 8.90 PLN (1.98 euro)/kg. Prices of imported greenhouse cucumbers remained stable due to competition from Polish cucumbers. The average price of cucumbers was 7 – 8 PLN (1.56 – 1.78 euro)kg.
Last week one could observe further rise in prices of citruses. Prices of Spanish oranges and mandarins were increasing at similar pace. The average prices of mandarins loose and oranges was 5.20 PLN (1.16 euro)/kg and 4.80 PLN (1.07 euro)/kg adequately. The price of lemons remained stable – on average 3 PLN (0.67 euro)/kg. As a result of smaller supply the price of bananas increased and last week the price of bananas imported from Ecuador was over 6.20 PLN (1.38 euro)/kg.
