Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (14-19.04.2009)

The week after Easter started with low movement on the fruit and vegetable markets. Turnover was low and prices were stable. However at the end of the week the movement was bigger and the situation was getting back to normal, i.e. further rise in prices of root vegetables and further decrease in prices of domestic early vegetables.
As regards apples their export prices again slightly increased last week. The price of apples of red varieties, 70 +, packed into cartons was 1.30 PLN(0.30 euro)/kg and price of apples size 80 + was 1.50 PLN (0.35 euro)/kg. Ligol was more expensive – to 1.45 PLN (0.34 euro)/kg and of course Golden Delicious and Gala – 2.20 PLN (0.51 euro)/kg and Mutsu 2.30 PLN (0.54 euro)/kg.
On the market of fresh vegetables the prices of root vegetables are still slowly increasing. There is big demand for celeriac, parsley and carrot but their supply is lower and lower what results in growing prices. Only beets are an exception and their average price remained stable week-on-week.
The price of Chinese cabbage was also increasing. The purchase price of Chinese cabbage in the South of Poland almost rose to the level of prices in the centre of the country – about 2 PLN (0.47 euro)/kg. Competitive Chinese cabbage imported from Hungary appeared on the market and its price was 2.30 PLN (0.54 euro)/kg, packed into cartons 6pcs. The sales of white cabbage is still very poor. The lack of demand from the eastern recipients border causes that the wholesale price of this cabbage doesn't exceed 0.30 PLN (0.07 euro)/kg and its purchase price are 0.12 – 0.14 PLN (0.03 euro)/kg. The red cabbage also remains cheap, although lower limit of its price range rose a little bit to 0.30 PLN 90.07 euro)/kg.
At the end of the last week prices of domestic tomatoes and greenhouse cucumbers and lettuces again started decreasing as result of bigger supply. However the decrease in price of tomatoes was only slight.
Last week the prices of some imported vegetables also were decreasing. One could especially observed decline in prices of Spanish broccoli. Their average price decreased by 25 %. Prices of imported cauliflowers, sweet pepper or leeks remained stable. The import of the butterhead lettuce is slowly ending. Last week the price of this lettuce was 35 PLN (8.18 euro)/16 pcs.
The prices of imported fruit remained stable week-on-week. However one could noticed the further decrease in price of Ecuadorian bananas – by 5 PLN (1.17 euro)/18 kg week-on-week.
