Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (15 - 20.12.2009)

On the market one can observe growing sales of fruit and vegetables before coming Christmas.
Fruit growers expect that at the begging of 2010 export of apples to Russia, will be considerably higher what gives hope for higher prices.

So far prices of apples intended for export remain stable. The price of apples of red varieties, size 70 + is still from 0.45 – 0.50 PLN (0.11-0.12 euro)/kg (without packaging). Price of yellow varieties is 0.70 – 0.90 PLN (0.17-0.21 euro)/kg.

Before Christmas there is the time of high sales of imported fruit, especially citruses. The highest demand concerns mandarins. Although big demand for imported fruit, their prices remained stable week-on-week.

On the contrary the prices of imported vegetables are still growing. Prices of tomatoes imported from Spain increased from 28 PLN (6.70 euro)/carton 6 kg to 36 - 38 PLN (8.61-9.09 euro)/carton week-on-week. Prices of Spanish cucumbers increased from 28 PLN (6.70 euro)/4.5 kg to 34 - 35 PLN (8.13-8.37 euro)/ 4.5 kg.

On the market one can observe growing sales of domestic vegetables and as a result increasing prices of some vegetables, e.g. red cabbage, leeks or celeriac.

The price of red cabbage reached 0.70 PLN (0.17 euro)/kg and the price of leeks increased even to 2.80 PLN (0.69 euro)/kg. At the end of the week, in some areas of Poland, celeriac and parsley became more expensive while at the beginning of the week their prices remained low.

On Friday, December 18th the price of washed celeriac reached even 1.50 PLN (0.36 euro)/kg, and the price of washed parsley of good quality was above 3.00 PLN (0.72 euro)/kg.

On the contrary the price of Chinese cabbage still remained low. Its maximum price was 1.10 PLN (0.26 euro)/kg for good quality cabbage in cardboard boxes. Last year in the second half of December the price of Chinese cabbage started growing.
