Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (16-22.02.2009)

In the third week of February one could observe slight decrease in prices of red apples intended for export. Price of apples 70 +, in cardboard boxes was from 0.70 PLN (0.15 euro)/kg, the price of Idared was from 0.75 PLN (0.16 euro)/kg. However the prices Golden Delicious and Mutsu remained stable at the level 1.40-1.70 PLN (0.29-0.36 euro)/kg.
Last week the prices of apples for processing increased a little bit as a result of low supply of these apples. In the central part of Poland their purchase price was to 0.20 PLN (0.042 euro)/kg. One can expect that in March, when more apples from CA stores will appear on the market, also the supply of industrial apples will grow and their prices will decrease.
In the third week of February in spite of further considerable declines in value of the zloty, the prices of the majority of imported fruit and vegetables remained stable. Prices of such vegetables like tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, iceberg lettuce even slightly decreased. Prices of oranges and lemons remained stable. Only prices of imported cauliflowers had an upward trend, and as regards fruit one could observe considerable increase in prices of mandarins even to 55 PLN (11.53 euro)/ 10 kg for medium size fruit.
Last week the prices of the majority of domestic vegetables remained stable. Only celeries and especially leeks became more expensive as a result of decreasing supply. On some wholesale markets also the prices of onions increased but it was rather short-term trend, taking into account the big supply of onions on the European markets. At the price level of 1.50-2.00 PLN (0.31-0.42 euro)/piece, bigger amounts of Savoy cabbages appeared on the market. Some producers probably started selling cabbages from cold stores. More Savoy cabbages will appear in March, and their prices probably will still increase.
