In the third week of May prices of apples intended for export remained stable. The average price of red varieties 70 + (including cartons) was 1.70 PLN (0.39 euro)/kg; the average price of Idared was a little bit higher – 1.75 PLN (0.40 euro)/kg.
The price of Golden Delicious was up to 2.20 PLN (0.50 euro)/kg, and the price of Mutsu - up to 2.50 PLN (0.57 euro)/kg. Generally one could observe the lower demand from Russian market.
Prices of strawberries generally decreased, however they were very unstable and even during one day the average price could much fluctuate. The prices were from 3.50 to 7 PLN (0.80-1.59 euro)/kg. At the moment there are more and more strawberries on the wholesale markets, however one can also observe difficulties in buying strawberries of good quality. As a result of poor weather conditions in the blossom period, fruits are generally small. Producers are worrying about the beginning of the purchase by processing plants which is predicted on 10 June. The information about supplies of frozen fruits from last season and speculations on minimum purchase prices of strawberries are not very optimistic.
On the market of fresh vegetables in the third week of May one could observed strong declines in prices of greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers and big fluctuation in prices of early cabbage and cauliflowers. The price of cucumbers decreased week-on-week from the average level 2.95 PLN (0.67 euro)/kg to 2.70 PLN (0.61 euro)/kg for long cucumbers and from 3.55 PLN (0.81 euro)/kg to 2.85 PLN (0.65 euro)/kg for short cucumbers. Prices of tomatoes decreased from 4.17 PLN (0.95 euro)/kg to 3.17 PLN (0.72 euro)/kg for B and from 4.49 PLN (1.02 euro)/kg to 3.58 PLN (0.81 euro)/kg for BB size.
Prices of ealry cabbage and cauliflowers much fluctuated. Day-on-day their prices changed even by 1 PLN (0.23 euro)/pcs. One can expect that especially prices of cauliflowers will much fluctuate because the supply of these vegetables is correlated strongly with weather conditions.
Last week one could also observed the decline in prices of imported vegetables especially onion, carrot and sweet pepper. Their prices decreased by dozen or so per cent. Only the price of imported leeks remained stable at the high level. The price of imported early potatoes (prices on the level of 2 PLN (0.45 euro)/kg) and young carrot (about 3 PLN (0.68 euro)/kg) were also slowly decreasing and imported. We have to still wait for the wholesale quantities of domestic early potatoes and carrot.
