Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (18.10-25.10.2009)

Last week prices of most fruit and vegetables remained stable or changed only slightly. This time of the year prices of vegetable change only slightly and bigger changes concern only such vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers or peppers.
Last week prices of apples also remained stable. Prices of industrial apples increased only slightly - by 0.01-0.02 PLN/kg. Prices of dessert apples didn’t change due to very small export. The producer price of apples, size 70 + was from 0.40 to 0.60 PLN (0.09-0.14 euro)/kg depending on the area of Poland. The prices of pears also didn’t change. The price of pears of the most popular varieties: Conference, Lucas and Paten (size 60 +) was about 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg.
This time of the year prices of such vegetables like tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers quickly increase. Last week, the price of cucumbers increased. However, the growth wasn’t big due to competition from cucumbers imported e.g. from Spain. Prices of imported cucumbers were 3.00 – 4.00 PLN (0.72-0.96 euro)/kg. The prices of domestic cucumbers increased only by 0.30 – 0.40 PLN (0.07-0.09 euro)/ kg week-on-week (long cucumbers to 3.75 PLN (0.85 euro)/kg and short cucumbers to 4.30 PLN (1.03 euro)/kg). As regards tomatoes, their price even decreased at the end of last week. The price of B size tomatoes was 2.42 PLN (0.58 euro)/kg and the price of BB tomatoes was 2.67 PLN (0.64 euro)/kg. Decrease in prices is caused by lower demand for Polish tomatoes in west Europe.
As in the case of cucumbers, increase in prices of peppers was also stopped due to competition from imported peppers. The supply of domestic peppers is already low, but it did not cause the increase in their prices. The price of red pepper in 5 kg boxes was 2.80 PLN (0.67 euro)/ kg.
Prices of cauliflowers and broccoli did not change. However unexpected winter weather in mid October may cause earlier end of the harvest of these vegetables and as result increase in prices.
As regards white cabbage the predictions for current season are completely different than last year. The supply of cabbage is low and demand also from foreign recipients is quite big and its price may increase.
