Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (2.05-9.05.2010) – vegetables

During the first week of May, which was shorter due to the holiday, fresh vegetables market was mainly influenced by the weather which was still adverse for vegetation of most vegetables. As a result the supply of early vegetables was not very big and decrease in their prices was slower.
The price of domestic lettuces slightly decreased. On Friday, May 7, the minimum price of lettuce was 22 PLN (5.26 €)/16 pcs, but it was also sold at 25 PLN (5.98 €)/16 pcs i.e. at the same price as a week earlier. At the end of the week prices of early white cabbage was lower than week earlier and on Friday it they were 2.00 – 2.50 PLN (0.48-0.60 €)/pcs.
First lots of young Chinese cabbage appeared on the market. Its price (including packaging) was 3.00 – 3.50 PLN (0.72-0.84 €)/kg and was lower than the price of Chinese cabbage imported from Hungary (4.00 PLN (0.96 €)/kg).
Last week prices of greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes increased and in the case of cucumbers the growth was quite big. The price of long cucumbers increased from 2.00 – 2.75 PLN (0.48-0.66 €)/kg to 2.80 – 3.50 PLN (0.67-0.84 €)/kg and prices of short cucumbers increased from 2.50 – 3.00 PLN (0.60-0.72 €)/kg to 3.50 – 4.20 PLN (0.84-1.00 €)/kg. Although at the beginning of the week there was downward trend in tomatoes prices, then their prices grew: from 4.00 - 4.33 PLN (1.00-1.04 €)/kg to 4.50 - 5.00 PLN (1.08-1.20 €)/kg for tomatoes size B and from 4.33 – 4.50 PLN (1.04-1.08 €)/kg to 5.00 - 5.66 PLN (1.20-1.35 €)/kg for tomatoes size BB.
Last week the demand for white cabbage from last year harvest was still very high and as a result its price increased to 1.30-1.50 PLN (0.31-0.36 €)/kg for cabbage from cold storage.
Stocks of other vegetables from last year harvest are ending and it resulted that prices of red cabbage or celeriac increased.
As regards imported vegetables the most interesting trend was the sharp drop in prices of sweet pepper. Price of red peppers imported from the Netherlands decreased from 70 PLN (16.75 PLN)/5 kg to 60 PLN (14.35 €)/5 kg. On the contrary prices of imported broccoli increased from 40 PLN (9.57 €)/10 pcs to 50 PLN (11.96 €)/10 pcs.
