Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (21 - 31.12.2009)

In the last decade of December the most important for the trade was as usual period just before Christmas. On the wholesale markets one could observe bigger sales and prices of some domestic vegetables rose. However exporters, especially ones exporting apples, are waiting for the new year, when export to Russia start.

The end of 2009 didn't bring a rise in prices of fruits intended for export. The producers price of apples of red varieties was from 0.40 to 0.60 PLN (0.097-0.14 euro)/kg (without packaging), depending on the quality and the area of Poland. The price of apples of yellow varieties was 0.70 – 0.90 PLN (0.17-0.22 euro)/kg (without packaging). Frosty weather just before Christmas influenced the prices of aplles on local markets, when their prices increased by about 3 – 4 PLN (0.73-0.97 euro)/box of 15 kg.

As regards vegetables, slight increse in prices was noted for the majority of domestic vegetables. Only the price of carrot had stronger upward trend. In the central part of Poland the price of the best quality carrot was to 1.00 PLN (0.24 euro)/kg.

One could also observe upward trend in prices of Chinese cabbage. The price of Chinese cabbage in carton was still at the level 0.90 – 1.10 PLN/kg, but its price reached even 2 PLN/kg.

In the south of Poland the price of white cabbage incresed even to 0.70 PLN/kg. The supply of white cabbage is smaller than in the end of 2008, so incresing prices aren't a surprise.

The period between Christmas and New Year passed calmly.
