Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (22.02 – 28.02.2010)

Last week one could observe many changes on the apples market. In one production area prices decreased while in another area increased. Generally trade companies purchased considerably less apples than previous weeks.
In the area of Grójec area prices of apples significantly fell, by average 0.10-0.20 PLN (0.025-0.05 €)/kg. Price of Idared, size 70+, from ordinary cold storage, decreased from 0.70-0.80 PLN(0.17-0.20 €)/kg to 0.65-0.70 PLN (0.16-0.17 €)/kg. Prices of other red varieties also decreased and purchasing companies paid producers only from 0.65 to 0.70 PLN (0.16-0.17 €)/kg, and in some cases even 0.60 PLN (0.15 €)/kg.
In the area of Sandomierz the situation was radically different. Prices of red apples varieties, size 70+, from ordinary cold storage increased and at the end of last week their prices was 0.70-0.80 PLN (0.17-0.20 €)/kg. The price of Idared was 0.80 – 0.85 PLN (0.20-0.21 €)/kg. In the region of Lublin the producer price of Idared was 0.70 - 0.80 PLN (0.17-0.20 €)/kg.
Apples of Ligol variety, size 75+ and 80+ which were in demand last week in the area of Lublin and Grójec, were bought at price 0.85 - 1.00 PLN (0.21-0.25 €)/kg. The only apples from ordinary storage, which were still in demand was Idared and its price was from 0.60 to 0.65 PLN (0.15-0.16 €)/kg for size 70+.
Apples of Gala variety, which were in demand recently, last week were bought in smaller quantities. The producer price of Gala, size 65 + was from 1.00 to 1.40 PLN (0.25-0.35 €)/kg.
Trade companies limited the purchase of pears to a minimum level. Pears are only bought in small quantities for the domestic market. It is caused by the enlargement from 1st March, of the list of products exported to Russia, for which safety certificates are obligatory. Pears have been added to this list.
In companies around Grójec, which continue to buy pears the purchase price of Conference and Lucas pears is 1.50 PLN (0.38 €)/kg for size 60 + and 70 +. In the area of Sandomierz the producer price for Conference size 65 + is 1.60 PLN (0.40 €)/kg.
The price of apples for processing did not change last week. The price in purchasing companies was from 0.12 to 0.15 PLN (0.03-0.038 €)/kg and the price in processing plants was 0.16-0.20 PLN (0.04-0.05 €)/kg depending on the region.
Last week of February did not bring significant changes on the market of fresh vegetables. Prices of vegetables, which were expensive, still remained high. First of alls it concerns onions and parsley. The prices of onion remained at the high level of 1.10 - 1.30 PLN (0.28-0.33 €)/kg (size 40 +). The price of washed parsley was 4.00 PLN (1.00 €)/kg. The supply of parsley in this season is not enough. Import of parsley is almost impossible because in other European countries its production is rather low.
Last week the prices of white cabbage remained stable - lower in the center of the country (0.70 – 0.85 PLN (0.17-0.21 €)/kg) and higher in the south of Poland (1.00 – 1.20 PLN (0.25-0.30 €)/kg). The prices of majority domestic vegetables also did not change. The exception was Chinese cabbage. The demand for this cabbage grows, especially from foreign recipients. The supply of good quality product is not big, so the price of such cabbage of green colour was 1.50 – 1.80 PLN (0.38-0.45 €)/kg (the price for product packed in cardboard boxes).
Domestic greenhouse cucumbers are the first sign of slowly coming spring . However their price are still high so they cannot much compete with imported cucumbers. The price of domestic cucumbers was 8 - 9 PLN (2.01-2.26 €)/kg, while the price of Spanish ones was 6.50-7.30 PLN (1.63-1.83 €)/kg.
Prices of majority imported vegetables did not change considerably. Price of Spanish tomatoes slightly increased to 42 - 44 PLN (10.55-11.05 €)/carton 6 kg (size G) and the price of red pepper increased to 43 PLN (10.80 €)/carton 5 kg. The Iceberg lettuce still remained expensive. Due to its wholesale price at the level of 4.80 PLN (1.21 €)/pcs., many retailers withdrew it from sale.
