Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (23.02-01.03.2009)

At the end of February one could observe some increase in the export of apples to the east and increase in prices of the majority of imported fruit and vegetables. Prices of domestic vegetables remained rather stable.
The bigger export of apples to eastern markets resulted in a little increase in their prices, first of all price of Idared and other red varieties. Last week the average price of apples 70 +, packed into cardboard boxes grew to 0.85 PLN (0.182 euro)/kg, so the price change wasn't too big, however one can expect further growth. Prices of apples can still increase because on the market there are more and more apple from CA. Last week the additional factor which caused bigger export to Ukraine was the information that at the beginning of March, Ukrainian duties for imported apples grow.
As regards imported fruit, last week prices of mandarins and oranges increased. The biggest increase was noted for Spanish mandarins. At the end of the last week their price was even 62 PLN (13.30 euro)/10 kg for fruit size 2 – 3. As compared to prices of mandarins, the increase in prices of oranges wasn't so big and as a result the demand for oranges grew. The price of lemons remained stable at the level of 3 PLN (0.64 euro)/kg.
Last week imported vegetables became more expensive, both these ones from the south of Europe and these ones from Netherlands or Belgium and France. Only the price of greenhouse cucumbers was stable because the imported ones have to already compete with Polish cucumbers. The price of iceberg lettuce decreased and at the end of last week the average price of lettuce was 2.9 PLN (0.62 euro)/piece i.e. by few % less than previous week.
The prices of the majority of domestic vegetables remained stable. However the average price of washed celeries increased to 1.25 PLN (0.27 euro)/kg. Moreover one could observe an increase in demand for high quality washed carrot and as a result its price was even 1.3 – 1.4 PLN (0.28-0.30 euro)/kg, i.e. the same price what price of carrot imported from Netherlands. In the end of February the main vegetable in the export to the East was Chinese cabbage and the trade in other vegetables was poor. However, in March, one can expect the growth trend in export of vegetables to the east
