Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (24-30.08.2009)

At the end of August the general trends in prices on the market of fruit and vegetables was similar to earlier ones. In case of fruit of the purchase prices of industrial apples and chokeberries were still low, and prices of plums were further decreasing.

On the contrary on the market of vegetables one can still observe high prices of cucumbers, tomatoes, cauliflowers and broccoli. There is still lack of cauliflowers and broccoli on the market.
Regards the purchase of industrial apples, prices were still at very low level about 0.15 PLN (0.036 euro)/kg in purchasing centers and about 0.20 PLN (0.049 euro)/kg for apples delivered just to the plants. At the moment the supply of industrial apples isn't big, however in some production areas (Grójec) one can notice slight increase in the purchase. Prices of export apples also remained stable: 0.80 – 1.00 PLN (0.20-0.24 euro)/kg (size 70 +, Paula Red and Delikates, without the package), however last week the volume of export decreased. At the end of the week the price of apples also decreased to 0.70 PLN (0.17 euro)/kg.

Last week the purchase prices of raspberries didn’t change much. In lubelskie province the price of raspberries of 1st class was 3.70 – 3.90 PLN (0.90-0.95 euro)/kg, and the price of fruit of 2nd class was 2.50–2.80 PLN (0.61-0.68 euro)/kg. There is still no demand for chokeberries and as a result the purchase prices are low: 0.35 – 0.40 PLN (0.085-0.097 euro)/kg and about 0.55 PLN (0.13 euro)/kg for fruit just delivered to the plant.

Last week the purchase prices of plums of variety Węgierka dąbrowicka was from 0.40 to 0.80 PLN (0.10-0.20 euro)/kg depending on the purpose and the area of Poland. The price of plums variety Węgierka Łowicka was a little bit higher due to lower supply on the market. The price increase week-on-week and reached 0.80 PLN (0.20 euro)/kg.

Last week one could again observe the low supply of cauliflowers and broccoli. Their supply is so low that prices of cauliflowers exceeded 4.00 PLN (0.97 euro)/pcs. The minimum price of these vegetables was 3.80 PLN (0.93 euro)/pcs. The price of broccoli was even above 2.50 PLN (0.61 euro)/pcs. The considerable increase in supply of these vegetables is expected in two weeks, but everything depends on the weather.

Prices of greenhouse cucumbers are also rising due to their low supply. It concerns especially short cucumbers and their prices increased to 3.00 – 3.50 PLN (0.73-0.85 euro)/kg.
Last week also average prices of tomatoes increased from 1.92 PLN (0.47 euro)/kg to 2.17 PLN (0.53 euro)/kg for B size and from 2.25 PLN (0.55 euro)/kg to 2.42 PLN (0.59 euro)/kg for BB size.
However on the market of vegetables there are also declines in prices. Last week it concerned for example carrot and beets. The price of carrot had been decreasing for long time and at the end of last week it was 0.55 PLN (0.13 euro)/kg. The prices of beets also decreased to 0.30 – 0.40 PLN (0.07-0.10 euro)/kg due to high supply and low demand especially from foreign recipients.
