Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (25.01 – 31.01.2010)

Last week one could observe a slight increase in the prices of apples, however it is due to the beginning of purchase of apples from cold stores, and not real price growth.

Prices of apples from cold stores are approximately 0.05 - 0.10 PLN (0.012-0.024 €/kg higher than the price of apples from the ordinary stores. Apples from ordinary stores are at the moment in much less demand.

The most often purchased varieties are still Golden Delicious, for which producers receive 1.00 -1.20 PLN (0.25-0.30)€/kg (size 70 +) and Mutsu at price from 1.30 PLN (0.32 €)/kg. Producers of  Idared have also no problem with selling their apples. The price of Idred from cold stores is 0.80 PLN (0.20 €)/kg. Jonagold and mutants, Gloster, Shampion and other red varieties are purchased at price from 0.65 to 0.80 PLN (0.15-0.20 €)/kg.
 
Prices of industrial apples did not changed and remained at 0.15 PLN (0.037 €)/kg in purchasing centers and 0.18-0.20 PLN (0.044-0.049 €)/kg in the processing plants.
 
Last week the prices of pears slightly increased and now the price of Conference is from 1.80 to 2.00 PLN (0.44-0.49 €)/kg (size 55-60) and the price of Lucas is 1.80 PLN (0.44 €)/kg (size 60 +) and 2.00 PLN (0.49 €)/kg (size 70 +).
 
The weather still much influences the situation on fresh vegetables market. At the end of last week the frost was not such hard like at the begging of the week, but its impact on prices was still visible. Low temperatures make it difficult to prepare the goods for sale and transport. This results in a decrease in the supply of fresh vegetables in the wholesale market, and in consequence in higher prices. Last week domestic vegetables, both brassicas and root were more expensive.
 
Price of Chinese cabbage packed in cardboard boxes reached even 1.50 PLN (0.37 €)/kg. The price of white cabbage was to 0.80 PLN (0.20 €)/kg, and the price of red cabbage – 1.00 PLN (0.25 €)/kg. The supply of Savoy cabbage is very low due to its sensitivity to low temperatures. Its price exceeded 1 (0.25 €)/kg.

Price of domestic carrot remained high - about 1.00 PLN (0.25 €)/kg. Price of washed parsley increased to 4.00 PLN (0.98 €)/kg. Due to weather now it is generally easier to buy unwashed than washed root vegetables.
 
One could still observe high price of onions (even 1.30 PLN (0.32 €)/kg due to its low supply. The supply of onion for processing is also very low even though its price was 0.90 PLN (0.22 €)/kg. Perhaps bigger import of onion will improve the situation in February.
 
Last week on the market of imported vegetables one could see a slight downward trend in prices. The following vegetables were cheaper: broccoli (2.50 PLN (0.62 €/pcs.), Iceberg lettuce (2.40 PLN (0.59 €)/pcs.), red sweet pepper (5.60 PLN (1.38 €)/kg), leeks (3.50 PLN (1.38 €)/kg).

The following vegetables had stable prices: tomatoes, size G (34 PLN (8.37 €)/carton 6 kg), cauliflowers (36 PLN (8.87 €)/box 8 pcs.), curled-leaved lettuces (32 PLN (7.88 €)/box 12 pcs). Only the price of cucumbers from Spain rose again - from 25 - 28 PLN (6.16-6.90 €) to 32 PLN (7.88 €)/4,5 kg.
