Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (26.10-01.11.2009)

The apple harvest is slowly ending. Prices are still stable. The prices of apples for export, size 70+, packed into cartons are from 0.60 to 0.90 PLN (0.14-0.21 euro)/kg depending on the area of Poland and variety.

Small amount of Idared appeared on the market and the price of this variety are similar to prices of other varieties - to 0.80 PLN (0.19 euro)/kg. The prices of industrial apples are also stable from 0.14 to 0.18 PLN (0.033-0.042 euro)/kg. The supply of such apples is low. Pear prices also remained stable - about 1.00 PLN (0.23 euro)/kg (size 60+).

At the beginning of November the season of such domestic vegetables like peppers and tomatoes ends. The last quantities of red pepper are available. Its price remained at 2.80 PLN (0.66 euro)/kg. On the market the supply of pepper imported from Spain is growing quickly. Its price was about 3.60 PLN (0.85 euro)/kg.

The harvest of domestic tomatoes growing under protection is ending. The supply of tomatoes of good quality is really low so their prices remained between 14.00 PLN (3.30 euro)/carton 6 kg (size B) to 17.00 PLN (4.00 euro)/carton 6 kg (size BB). The supply of tomatoes of poor quality is bigger and their prices are of course lower - from 8.00 PLN (1.89 euro)/carton (size B) and 10.00 PLN (2.36 euro)/box (BB).

On the market there are more and more imported cucumbers. The price of long cucumbers imported from Spain was 12.00 PLN (2.83 euro)/carton 4.5 kg.

One can also observe the end of the cauliflowers and broccoli harvest. The lower supply of these vegetables caused the increase in their prices. The price of cauliflowers, packed in cartons intended for export was 2.00 PLN (0.47 euro)/pcs. and the price of broccoli was to 1.80 PLN (0.42 euro)/pcs. The purchase of these vegetables for processing also ended.

More and more signals from the market confirm the predictions that this season the prices of white cabbage will be much higher than last season. At the present the price of cabbage is 0.45 – 0.60 PLN (0.11-0.14 euro)/kg. The crops of cabbage is relatively small and the demand also from foreign recipients is quite big.

Last week one could also observe increasing demand for good quality onions. Onion is in demand not only from domestic market but also from CIS countries. Price of onion was about 0.50 PLN (0.12 euro)/kg, but it was difficult to buy because producers wait for higher prices.
