Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (27.09 – 01.10.2010) – vegetables

At the end of September price trends for many vegetables remained stable. However a few days with unfavourable weather again caused difficulties with the harvest of some vegetables.
Due to high supply the purchase prices of cauliflowers remained stable – 0.80-1.00 PLN (0.20-0.25 euro)/pcs. Only near Warsaw the price was higher – 1.70 PLN (0.43 euro)/pcs.
Prices of cabbages decreased with exception of white cabbage. Supply of white cabbage of bigger heads over 2 kg is insufficient and it caused higher prices. The average price of cabbage was 0.70 PLN (0.18 euro)/kg and the price of the biggest heads reached 1.00 PLN (0.25 euro)/kg.
Prices of red and savoy cabbages decreased to 1.00-1.20 PLN (0.25-0.30 euro)/kg.
Chinese cabbage also became cheaper. Its price was 1.50 PLN (0.38 euro)/kg and further decrease in price is expected.
Supply of root vegetables was growing but their quality is poor very often. Price of carrot and beets remained stable – 0.60-0.80 PLN (0.15-0.20 euro)/kg and 0.50-0.60 PLN (0.13-0.15 euro)/kg respectively.
Prices of celeriac and parsley were from 1.50 PLN (0.38 euro)/kg.
Prices of onion remained high (0.90-1.20 PLN (0.23-0.30 euro)/kg) due to low supply and poor quality of this vegetable. Further increase in onion prices is expected. However prices of onion will be influenced by import.
Prices of potatoes also remained stable – 0.60 – 0.70 PLN (0.15-0.18 euro)/kg. Crops of potatoes are expected to be slightly higher than last year (+1.3 %) but the quality of potatoes will be poor so their supply on the fresh market will be lower.
Additionally prices of many vegetables (root vegetables, onion and potatoes) will be influenced by the fact that Russia reduced import duties since October 1.
Prices of cucumbers both field grown and greenhouse remained stable – 2.00-2.50 PLN (0.51-0.63 euro)/kg and 2.00 – 2.60 PLN (0.51-0.66 euro)/kg respectively. By contrast prices of tomatoes increased to 20 PLN (5.06 euro)/6 kg for B size and 23 PLN (5.82 euro)/6 kg for BB size. It was due to bigger export to Russia where there is still high demand for Polish tomatoes.
