Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (30.03-05.04.2009)

As regards price situation last week didn’t bring any surprises on the market of fresh fruit and vegetables. The most important factors which had the impact on prices of fruit and vegetables were as follows: decreasing supply of domestic vegetables of last year’s crop, bigger movement on the market before coming Easter and increasing amount of spring vegetables.
The influence of coming Easter one could see in the trade in apples. Many producers don't want to open CA stores before the Easter and one could observe lower supply of apples. Prices of apples intended for export didn't change much week-on-week, however one could notice certain rise in prices of red varieties. The price of apples in cartons, 70 + was to 1.20 PLN/kg. The price of Golden Delicious was 1.80 PLN (0.40 euro)/kg and Mutsu – 2.00 PLN (0.45 euro)/kg.
The purchase of industrial apples was also lower and their price remained stable – from 0.15 to 0.20 PLN (0.03-0.04 euro)/kg in purchasing centers in the area of Grójec.
Decreasing supply of vegetables of last year’s crop causes the rise in their prices. One can see it well on the example of carrot and celeriac of good quality. The supply of domestic carrot is very low and in some areas e.g. in the centre of Poland there is practically no carrot. As a result the prices of carrot both Polish and imported went up and they were even at level 2.30 PLN (0.52 euro)kg. Last week the price of washed celeriac reached 2 PLN (0.45 euro)/kg.
The supply of Chinese cabbage is also decreasing, what together with big demand for this vegetable caused the rise in prices even to the level 2.50 PLN (0.56 euro)/kg. The market is showing also the growing interest in potatoes and their price reached 0.70 PLN (0.16 euro)/kg.
However a rise in prices of beets, onion and red and white cabbages is only slight so far.
On the market there are more and more the spring vegetables what affect their prices. Polish greenhouse cucumbers and lettuce are getting cheaper, however the Polish lettuce is still more expensive than imported lettuce. The similar situation is for Polish tomatoes. Their price is decreasing, but imported tomatoes are still much cheaper. Last week the average price of Spanish tomatoes was 7 PLN (1.57 euro)/kg. One could also observe the decreasing price of imported red pepper. Its average price was 8 PLN (1.80 euro)/kg. However broccoli became more expensive and the price increased considerably from the level 3.65 PLN (0.82 euro)/pcs in the end of March to 5.40 PLN (1.21 euro)/pcs at the beginning of April.
The prices of imported fruit remained rather stable. The price of bananas is stable at the level 105 PLN (23.6 euro)/18 kg. Mandarins were an exception. There are less and less mandarins on the market what resulted in a rise in their price (about 55 – 56 PLN (12.35 -12.58 euro)/10 kg for loose mandarins).
