Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (30.11 – 6.12.2009)

The beginning of December one could finally observe bigger export of apples, mainly due to lower customs duty in Ukraine. However, the supply of apples is high and their prices did not increase significantly.

Last week the price of apples of red varieties, size 70 + had was from 0.45 – 0.50 PLN (0.11-0.12 euro)/kg (without packaging). Prices of industrial apples did not change (0.15 - 0.16 PLN (0.036-0.039 euro)/kg). Only in Silesia region the prices was higher (to 0.22 PLN (0.054 euro)/kg) because there apples are delivered from other regions of Poland.

One can observe considerable demand for pears. Last week, the price of Lucas, size 60 + was 1.60 – 1.90 PLN (0.39-0.46 euro)/kg (with packaging). The price may even rise because the stock of pears is slowly ending.

On the fresh vegetables market one could observe stabilization with a small downward trend in prices of these root vegetables and brassicas, which supply is currently very high. Overall, the market of domestic vegetables is now quiet, especially as regards export. Imported vegetables play increasingly important role on the market. After sweet peppers, cucumbers, lettuces and tomatoes, the import of cauliflowers started. The price of cauliflowers imported from France was about 2 PLN (0.49 euro)/pcs. One can expect soon the import of broccoli. So far, it is still possible to buy domestic broccoli. Last week their prices were 2.00 – 2.50 PLN (0.49-0.61 euro)/pcs (packed in cartons).

As regards tomatoes, the market is already dominated by imported ones. Price of Spanish tomatoes size G (BB) was about 20 PLN (4.89 euro)/6 kg. Prices of Spanish sweet peppers and cucumbers remained stable - 27 - 28 PLN (6.60-6.84 euro)/ 5 kg and 16 PLN (3.91 euro)/4.5 kg respectively.

Traders hope for sales growth before coming Christmas.
