More expensive aubergine

Till now they were cheap or even very cheap. It was possible thanks to low prices in Spain (producer of aubergine). Weather was good as well as crops. Demand was limited.

As a result prices of aubergine at auctions in Almeria were at the level of 0.27 - 0.44 EUR/kg.

In Poland there also wasn't big demand for this vegetable. Mainly good weather influenced that. Last week it was possible to buy Spanish aubergine for 2.00 - 4.00 PLN/kg depending on quality).

However it's past. Weather in Spain got much worse. what is more on Wednesady there was a huge storm which destroyed 300 ha of glasshouse crops in Almeria. In result supply of vegetable is much limited but demand has increased. On the wholesale market in Poland prices reached the level of 28.00 - 30.00 PLN/ 5kg carton (5.60 - 6.00 PLN/kg).

Meanwhile, prices in Almeria increased to 1.10 - 1.60 EUR/kg (Larga aubergine) and to 1.32 - 1.45 EUR/kg for Rayada aubergine. It is minimum 4.50 PLN/kg and maximum 6.68 PLN/kg.

It is already known that aubergine imported to Poland next week will cost over 40.00 PLN/ 5kg carton (transport included). It seems that prices will be still increasing.
