Tomato prices keep on going down
We can expect next season of low prices. Mainly due to last year when supply of tomatoes was low but prices were dropping very fast.
To a large reason is was a result of frauds - Belgian tomatoes had been selling as Polish vegetables. It caused higher supplu of "domestic" tomatoes and lead to price drop.
Last year prices of domestic greenhouse tomatoes dropped from 120.00 - 122.00 PLN/ 6 kg box to 60.00 - 84.00 PLN/6kg carton at the end of March.
In the first week of April prices were at the level of 50.00 - 60.00 PLN / carton. Spanish ones were offered at price of 45.00 - 49.00 PLN / carton.
Currently there is a similar situation. It can be noticed that prices are getting lower a bit faster than in March 2013. Now box of tomatoes costs60.00 - 75.00 PLN. This year also Spanish vegetables are cheaper - 33.00 - 40.00 PLN/ box.
Prices are going down but imported tomatoes are still more expensive and this is why producers won't be forced to cut-prices. Thanks to this they'll be able to compete with Spain.
