Weekly summary – fresh-market.pl price analysis (29.06-05.07.2009)
At the end of June and beginning of July harvests of blackcurrants started. The first prices in purchasing centers aren't too high, from 1.40 to 1.80 PLN (0.37-0.41 euro)/kg, depending on the area of Poland.
The price of black currants delivered to processing plants is 2.00 – 2.10 PLN (0.46-0.48 euro)/kg. The majority of producers expects that prices will increase. Similar situation was last year, when at the begging of the purchase the prices were 1.80 – 2.00 PLN (0.41-0.46 euro)/kg and the producers also expected higher prices. However the prices didn’t increased.
The purchase of red currants also started last week and the first average price was 1 PLN (0.23 euro)/kg.
As regards strawberries, their main harvest is slowly ending. This season wasn’t good for producers. Last week the price of dessert strawberries was from 1.50 – 2.00 PLN (0.34-0.46 euro)/kg (Honeoye) to 4 PLN (0.91 euro)/kg (Marmolada). Prices of industrial strawberries remained low, although they recently increased slightly, because the supply of strawberries for the processing is very low. The price of strawberries with stalks was 0.65 – 0.75 PLN (0.15-0.17 euro)/kg and the price of strawberries without stalks was 1.30 - 1.70 PLN (0.30-0.39 euro)/kg.
The situation for cherries isn’t better. Long lasting rains caused that fruits are cracking and they aren't suitable for transport. Last week the lowest price of cherries was 2 PLN (0.46 euro)kg for Van variety, to 5 PLN (1.14 euro)/kg for Cordia, and the highest price was for Summit – even to 12 PLN (2.75 euro)/kg. For raspberries the weather also wasn't favourable. There are a lot of fruits of poor quality and processing plants don't want to pay more than 2.80 PLN (0.64 euro)/kg. The price of raspberries of good quality for freezing was 4 PLN (0.91 euro)/kg.
On the market of fresh vegetables one could observe the further decline in prices of broccoli, cauliflowers and green peppers due to high supply of these vegetables. The average price of broccoli dropped from 1.90 (0.43 euro) to 1.25 PLN (0.29 euro)/pcs. week-on-week.; price of cauliflowers from 1.60 (0.37 euro) to 1.25 PLN (0.29 euro)/pcs. The price of green pepper decreased from 4.50 PLN (1.03 euro)/kg to 3.00 PLN (0.69 euro)/kg. The increase in supply also resulted in the decline in prices of young carrot (from 1.20 PLN (0.27 euro)/kg to 0.98 PLN (0.22 euro)/kg) and young beets (from 1.50 PLN (0.34 euro)/kg even to 0.50 PLN (0.11 euro)/kg). The average prices of courgettes also decreased considerably – from 3.25 PLN (0.74 euro)/kg to 1.75 PLN (0.40 euro)/kg week-on-week.
Also the price of greenhouse cucumbers slightly decreased. The average price of long cucumbers decreased from 1.85 (0.42 euro) to 1.50 PLN (0.34 euro)/kg, and the price of short ones from 2.50 (0.57 euro) to 1.65 PLN (0.38 euro)/kg. At the moment the prices of tomatoes stabilized at the low level. The average price of tomatoes B was 2.25 PLN (0.51 euro)/kg and the price of tomatoes BB was 2.68 PLN (0.61 euro)/kg. The prices of tomatoes are similar to prices of tomatoes in the corresponding period of last year (2.50 PLN/kg of tomatoes B and 2.75 PLN/kg of tomatoes BB – end of June 2008).
