What about celery prices in Poland?

2018-11-28 21:40

Complaints about celery prices are quite common among producers and among traders, especially complaints about low demand for these vegetables. And they have been complaining for a lot of time now. That the buyers have a poor interest, that there are no (at least for now) prospects for improvement, and the price dynamics this season was very different from what was happening with the prices of parsley or carrots, for example.

Especially the latter argument is accurate and indisputable. Prices of celery in the wholesale market have shown very limited volatility since August.

However, does this mean that the situation on the market for these vegetables is so poor? It does not seem to be the case. Such negative assessments are precisely the result of comparisons with the very high prices that other vegetables achieve in the current season. Although celery was not as expensive as carrots and their prices are far from the records, it is worth noting that they were also not cheap, as is usually the case in autumn. As a result, their current level may not make an impression on parsley prices, but let's compare it with previous years on the celery market.

Current sales prices are 0,35 - 0,47 EUR/kg, depending on the region of the country and quality. This gives an average of 0,41 EUR/kg. It may not be 200 per cent higher than last year, but it is not low either. It is two thirds higher than last year. What is more, it has equalled the record price of November 2015 in recent years. And that means something. This shows that although the current demand for celeriac in the large wholesale market does not knock you to your knees, it is also in this segment of the market that the low harvest caused by drought and heat in summer imprints its stigma. This, in turn, is a premise to expect bigger price changes in the second half of the season. In spring 2016, the average price reached 1,05 EUR/kg, so this year may be similar.
