What is the situation on the onion market in south-eastern Poland?

2018-11-15 12:47

The upward trend in wholesale prices of onions seems to be waning. And it's not surprising, because even with low harvests prices can't increase indefinitely. So far it seems that the market has reached some level of equilibrium, although it might be a temporary state.

Nevertheless, the recent increases in onion prices caused the activation of importers. There was information about offers from Ukraine ( also onions re-exported by this country and coming from Central Asian countries), Belarus, Lithuania and even Germany, although the harvest there was also small.

We write that the equilibrium is probably temporary, because the scale of the decline in harvests on the European market is so large that it will have a huge impact on trading conditions in winter and spring, which will translate into prices even higher than the current ones.

Winter onion prices in a large wholesale markets in south-eastern Poland are as follows:

- Igołomi area - 0,28 - 0,33 EUR/kg, depending on the size and quality,
