Red cabbage again is more expensive than 5 years ago
The last two months of the previous year was a period of stagnation in the red cabbage market. Despite the limited supply, which was the result of poor harvest, prices of red cabbage does not grow, although it must be borne in mind that in the first half of December were at a record level compared to the last few seasons. You can see it on our chart.
The beginning of the new year also brought no apparent change in prices of red cabbage, although we could see a pro-growth expectations of many market participants. Currently, such expectations seem to meet.
Prices of red cabbage on the Polish wholesale market is clearly strengthened in the past few days. Finally, we can see effect of low supply. Certainly the rise in prices was also supported by the arrival of cold weather, which always makes it difficult to trade in fresh vegetables market.
Currently sales prices of red cabbage are between 1.60 - 1.80 zł/kg. That's nearly 10 percent more than last week. This gives an average of 1.70 zł/kg. Thus, the average price is again above the level of the corresponding period of the 2010/2011 season.
The question is whether it is only the price adjustment or the beginning of a trend. Looking at the chart you can see that even in the 2010/2011 season, which was almost as bad in terms of harvesting cabbage, prices of that particular cultivar were much higher. It tends to forecast a rather stable scenario for the next months. However, very dependent on the weather and its impact on stocks quality. So one can’t rule out a further strengthening of prices.
